Luke Combs - Fathers & Sons - Vinyl

A collection of 12 poignant tracks, Fathers & Sons was recorded entirely live and features Combs most personal songwriting to date, as he reflects on his own experiences being a dad to his two sons and the unique bond between parents and their children.

Reflecting on "The Man He Sees In Me," Combs shares a message he wrote to his young sons, "To my boys, first and foremost, I will always love you, no matter what. With this song I want you to know that even though I'm not perfect, I try my hardest every day to be the best version of myself for you both. I'll make mistakes along the way and some days you'll be sick of your old man, I'm sure, but, dang, we'll have some fun too. I can't wait to see what you both turn out to be like and I hope someday down the road, I get to watch you and your kids do the same. Love, Dad."

In addition to Combs, Fathers & Sons also features acclaimed musicians Jim "Moose" Brown (keys), Sam Bush (mandolin), Stuart Duncan (fiddle), Mark Hill (bass), Josh Hunt (drums), Joey Landreth (electric guitar), Steve Mackey (bass), Josh Matheny (dobro), Jerry Roe (drums), Jonathan Singleton (acoustic guitar), Bryan Sutton (acoustic guitar) and Charlie Worsham (acoustic guitar).

Chameleon [Crystal Blue LP]
$28.98  23.57
chart cover

When the Amsterdam singer-songwriter Jana Mila (pronounced Yah-nuh MEE- lah) began writing a song called “Chameleon,” she thought she was writing about someone else—a friend who seemed to be changing her colors to please other people. “But the more I lived with the song, the more I felt like I was writing about myself,” she admits. “Doesn’t everybody try to reflect other people? Don’t I change my own colors in order to be accepted? Especially when you’re young, you can lose yourself in other people if you don’t know who you are.” That is the central idea behind her debut album, also titled Chameleon, which introduces Mila as an artist deeply committed to self-reckoning and self-possession. Our innate desire to belong and to be loved can lead to a kind of self-annihilation, making us strangers to ourselves. Writing songs is her means of finding and sustaining her identity.“The album is a conversation with myself, a way of getting to know myself better. There are little fears woven into every lyric, but there’s also advice to myself. I’m writing to find a part of myself that has some wisdom.” Musically, Mila is the best kind of chameleon. The album draws from a wild array of sources, entertaining new ideas on every song: dusty Laurel Canyon folk on “It’s True,” catchy Nashville country on “Let Me In,” driving ‘70s rock on “I Wasn’t Gonna.” She puts her stamp on every note, turning those fears into an album of remarkable confidence, eloquence, and power. Chameleon is a self-portrait rendered in vibrant detail.

These songs are a showcase of Caudle’s singular command of language. He sees the world through a hyperreal lens wholly unique to him, one that renders dank humidity “horsefly heat,” a moody sky “cast iron skillet” dark, or a loved one’s “wind chime of a smile.”

Amelia

Amelia is Laurie Anderson’s subjective narrative piece about the renowned female aviator Amelia Earhart's tragic last flight. Anderson wrote the songs and lyrics, which she performs with her ensemble and the Czech orchestra Filharmonie Brno, conducted by Dennis Russell Davies. “The words used in Amelia are taken from her pilot diaries, the telegrams she wrote to her husband, and my idea of what a woman flying around the world can think of,” Anderson says.

Amelia was originally commissioned by the American Composers Orchestra in 2000 and was performed in various versions. Some of the text was adapted from Amelia Earhart’s pilot’s log.  The album also features vocals by Anohni and Marc Ribot on guitar.

The Phantom Five [Indie Exclusive Translucent Light Blue LP]
$24.98  24.92
chart cover
AWOLNATION titling the fifth album of original songs in 15 years The Phantom Five is about more than just chronology. The number 5 is associated with independence and individualism, major life changes and experiences, all of which influenced the resulting album. It’s a collection of ten songs that highlights every different impulse and urge Bruno has learned to master with AWOLNATION in a cohesive, anthemic pastiche of modern music. As he himself admits, it functions almost as a “greatest hits” album, in the sense that it offers something for everyone who has followed the band’s arc in its celebrated, shape-shifting way. The first single, “Panoramic View,” stands out with its sincerity on its sleeve; in fact, while not necessarily a new direction for AWOL, the idea of a heartfelt ballad being the first track available to fans is emblematic of Bruno’s newfound control over every aspect of an album release—something that he says might not have happened in previous days. From upstart, tongue-in-cheek blasts like “Jump Sit Stand March” and “When I Was Young” to the Roy Orbison, oldies-inspired ode to beauty and self-destruction “A Letter to No One” and the jangly segue “City of Nowhere” calling to mind The Cars and Grandaddy, not to mention guest spots from Dead Sara’s Emily Armstrong and Del the Funky Homosapien, The Phantom Five is concerned with trying to find one’s way to happiness in a bizarrely upside-down time.

On The Intricate Inner Workings Of The System
$25.98  22.26
chart cover
Loser Edition Smoke Vinyl. The way you're saying it, "prolific" isn't the right word for The Bug Club. You've got to say it with the trademark Welsh lilt and pay due homage to this inimitable band's origins in the renowned hit factory of Caldicot, South Wales. Do that, and you're about right with how to summarize a group who've released ten singles, two albums, two EPs, three things nobody knew how to describe, and an album under a different band's name, all since 2021, and while playing 200+ gigs a year.Initially comprising the songwriting core of Sam Willmett (vocals/guitar) and Tilly Harris (vocals/bass) with Dan Matthew (drums), The Bug Club started plying their trade in 2016. They were signed by UK label Bingo Records in Autumn of 2020. BBC 6 Music's Marc Riley was an early champion, hammering the single, booking the band in for a session as soon as it was allowed, and rightfully praising songwriters capable of singing the whole alphabet in a two-minute song and making it work. Third LP On The Intricate Inner Workings Of The System - their first for Sub Pop - sees the band serve up a beefy slab of their speciality Modern-Lovers-meets-Nuggets garage rock. There's B-52's call-and-response fun mixed with AC/DC power chord grunt. Leaning towards fast-paced punk, opening double salvo "War Movies" and "Quality Pints" sets out the stall: duel vocal piss-taking, surreal takes on everyday topics that go full circle and become profound, riffs all day long and then all the next day too. "Quality Pints" deals with the pressing concerns of any conscientious touring outfit, taking to heart the rule of the three R's as penned by renowned fellow pints fan Mark E. Smith of The Fall. Repetition, repetition, repetition. If it's that important, which it is, it's worth saying again. "War Movies" dresses distorted chugging with a comprehensive 'best of' list for the genre, with Sam Willmett offering a solo casually chucked out in a way that will make your dad promptly give up any resurgent guitar playing ambitions. And "A Bit Like James Bond" tackles the UK's sleaziest undercover export at the same time as the embarrassing ego problem that besets much of it's population - but it's only heavy (ish) in the fun, loads-of-riffs sense. So, that's what they've been finishing up during their massive month-long break from gigs. In a bid to avoid being branded layabouts, The Bug Club will support their upcoming Sub Pop release with a springtime tour of the UK and Europe beginning May 10, before heading out to the US in September.

Every Time I Think About You (Broz) [Colored Vinyl] (Gate)
$29.98  24.49
chart cover

At its best, harmony duo singing can transform simple math into a magic trick. One plus one, instead of equaling two, suddenly yields an unexpected third thing. An upper-case ONE. A universal hum. A deep vibration that encompasses two different points of view. On their latest release, Every Time I Think About You, brothers Page Burkum and Jack Torrey, aka The Cactus Blossoms, once again prove themselves to be among the most adept - and instinctive – modern practitioners of the classic tradition.

All sorts of emotional colors shine through on their new album. “Something's Got A Hold On Me” is pure Saturday night two-steppin' joy, “Keep Walkin'” has a Stones-y swagger and “There She Goes” casts its romantic regret against a danceable bop beat. “Statues” is a gorgeous meditation on the weight of permanent honor, “Is It Any Wonder” weaves its pledge of enduring love through nature images, and the title track is a heart-wrencher about loss and letting go. In all, the ten beautifully open-ended songs here invite listeners in to find their own stories as they revel in the old-school melodies and harmonies.

Almost three decades on from their last release, Acid Jazz forefathers Galliano are back with news of their new LP 'Halfway Somewhere' which is being released on Gilles Peterson's Brownswood Recordings on 30 August. On 'Circles Going Round The Sun', the first single to be lifted off their new album, Galliano founder Rob Gallagher meditates on what gathering together in clubs means. "The first time you dance you break boundaries between matter and spirit, self and other, individual and group" he intones on a record that references dance culture sages Andrew Weatherall and David Mancuso next to writer George Mackay Brown and artist Mark Leckey. Born out of London's underground clubs and warehouse parties of the mid to late eighties, with the debut single on the Acid Jazz label in 1988, Galliano came out of a culture that spanned music, dance, fashion, art, design, and the written word. When they arrived as the first act on Gilles Peterson's Talkin' Loud label in 1990 with 'Welcome to the Story' (produced by Chris Bangs who invented the term Acid Jazz) dressed in Gabicci sweaters, beads and skullcaps they captured a scene built on re-invention. "We were all playing around with what we could get our hands on whether that was a seventies book on Jamaican style or old Last Poets and Watts Prophets records," says Gallagher. "We'd been recycling things for a few years but suddenly everything had coalesced and you've got an amalgam that seemed quite solid." For their first album since 'Live at The Liquid Room (Tokyo)' in 1997, Rob Gallagher and his partner, vocalist Valerie Etienne, are joined by Galliano stalwarts Ernie McKone on bass, Crispin Taylor on drums, and Ski Oakenfull on keys (with guests including saxophonist Jason Yarde and percussionist Crispin 'Spry' Robinson). Where the old Galliano recycled records they heard at clubs, today they are responding to the kaleidoscopic global jazz scene - from Total Refreshment Centre in London to International Anthem in Chicago. More than forty years since they came together, Galliano are still only 'Halfway Somewhere', but listening to the album they are obviously having fun getting there. "I think the stars have to be aligned when you redo things," says Gallagher. "Coming at it from this door is very different to the door we came into back then. But once it's existing it is something. But I'm still not sure what that something is." Galliano - Halfway Somewhere

Every Bridge Burning - Forest Green [Colored Vinyl] (Grn)

For the first time in over 8 years, the blistering assault on our nervous system that can only be described as the sound of NAILS, has reemerged. With Carlos Cruz on drums, Andrew Solis on Bass, Shelby Lermo on Guitars, and Todd Jones on guitar & vocals, the upcoming studio album, EVERY BRIDGE BURNING, will be revealed August 30th, 2024 via Nuclear Blast Records. For this 4th full length album, NAILS have channeled raw emotion into tracks like "Imposing Will", a seismic event in the realm of sonic aggression; igniting the pulse, and fueling a fire of hostility. "[This track is] special to the record in that I knew we wanted it to be the opener," explains founder Todd Jones. "We wanted it to have the effect of an urgency; an immediacy in the music itself. When you push play, you get smacked in the face." Similarly, "Give Me the Painkiller" hints at an intricate groove while simultaneously causing the urge to peel your skin off. There exists a wild energy that according to Jones is the band's "most expressive guitar playing" in their history. Plunge into "Punishment Map", and confront the decades of misery brought about by Golden State serial killer Joe D'Angelo-a relentless descent into the abyss of human suffering. The guitar work on EVERY BRIDGE BURNING is an expansive force in it's own right, epitomized in tracks like, No More Rivers to Cross. Here, NAILS masterfully navigates a spectrum of moods, showcasing fluidity and intensity that is quintessentially NAILS yet profoundly evolved. The album artwork, a creation by Jeff Whitehead, serves as a visual prelude to the auditory chaos-a stark representation of the aural brutality that NAILS delivers. "I really wanted to work with Whitehead again," explains Jones. "I wanted the artwork to represent the sound of NAILS visually, and to reference the same figure from our last album cover."The writing process for this album was no different than in record cycles of the past. The foundations of songs are born from riffs, and it is around these riffs that entire tracks are eventually composed. "Our writing process is about building songs," explains Jones, "not just sitting down and writing them straight through all at once."Recording for the album commenced in Massachusetts at God City Studio with Kurt Ballou (of CONVERGE), whose contribution is integral to The Nails sound, as elucidated by Jones: "we've recorded every album with Kurt. He's such an important ingredient as to how we present our music. When our fans want to hear NAILS, they want to hear something that is through the filter of Kurt's engineering."Most importantly, EVERY BRIDGE BURNING was born out of unwavering dedication to NAILS fans and the underground music scene. It echoes their commitment to authenticity and raw power. NAILS remains a beacon of rebellion and resilience in a world hungry for genuine expression. With no shortage of effort or meticulous song arrangement, the time has arrived to become engulfed in the ferocity of NAILS once again as EVERY BRIDGE BURNING unveils a new, but familiar chapter in extreme music. "This band was modeled after some of my favorite bands; the type of bands where, when they put out an album, you know what it's going to sound like," describes Jones, "it's the delivery of the expectation." The sensory destroying musical onslaught that we've all been missing is back. NAILS is Todd Jones, Carlos Cruz, Andrew Solis, and Shelby Lermo. Forest Green LP

STEEP CANYON RANGERS / LIVE AT GREENFIELD LAKE / Hailing from both the Appalachian and Piedmont regions of North Carolina, the Steep Canyon Rangers have long held traditional bluegrass paramount, while possessing an exceptional ability to bring it down the mountain, and to incorporate accessible influence from all walks of the region. With the band's last few albums, they have gained recognition from well beyond the world of bluegrass, earning a reputation as some of the most influential songwriters in Americana today. The band has made a name for themselves across the past quarter-century, with outlets like Rolling Stone recognizing them as "one of the most sought-after groups in Americana, bluegrass, and indie-folk." Demand for a new live album from the Rangers increased after their GRAMMY-nominated 2019 album North Carolina Songbook, where the band covered songs across a multitude of artists all born in the Tar Heel State (ranging from James Taylor to Doc Watson to Thelonious Monk, to name a few) at MerleFest. The album drew widespread acclaim and topped the Billboard Bluegrass Chart for numerous weeks, and the requests for a live album of Steep Canyon Rangers' original songs grew louder and louder. Live at Greenfield Lake finally captures the magic of Steep Canyon Rangers' onstage chemistry, demonstrating the band's unparalleled harmonies and rich songwriting that has made the band one of the most critically-acclaimed across Americana music. The spellbinding, tender performances of "Recommend Me" and "Birds of Ohio" mixed with blistering, barnburning renditions of "Afterglow" and "Sunny Days" exhibit the wide breadth of styles and genres that the Rangers tackle in concert. The album was mixed and pressed at the state-of-the-art audiophile facilities of Citizen Vinyl in the band's hometown of Asheville, North Carolina, and the lacquer is cut by renowned engineer Jeff Powell of Takeout Vinyl.

Time Ii - White [Colored Vinyl] (Wht)
$26.98  22.74

Finally our patience will be rewarded when Finnish Wintersun's 'Time II' album is revealed to the world on August, 30th by Nuclear Blast. 'It has been quite a journey' admits mastermind Jari Mäenpää who has been working on his expansive 'Time' project since early 2004.'Time II' includes six epic tracks with individual stories. Yet the subjects are all linked and this red line gives it a conceptual feeling. Entering Wintersun's universe, we are brought into the right mood with the eastern-influenced, atmospheric intro 'Fields Of Snow'. The first real Wintersun track is the metallic brilliance of 'The Way Of The Fire', with fire representing the energy of stars as a source of life, which is also connected to time. In 'One With The Shadows' we experience the magic of an opulence of vocal harmonies, while orchestral arrangements loom up as ornamental move. Jari has a remarkable vision on the lyrics, 'Now I think it is about regret. You are living in the shadows as long as you don't turn regret into something positive to continue your life. In 'Ominous Clouds', clouds are gathering as the interlude journeys towards the next exploring adventure 'Storm'. 'This is the heaviest and darkest track on the album,' explains Jari. 'It even has influences from classical music, more precisely from Vivaldi's 'Four Seasons', furious guitars and heavy drums prevail, while the tone remains chaotic.' The last track, 'Silver Leaves', with an array of harmonious sounds, partly performed with traditional Chinese instruments like the 'erhu' (similar to the violin or fiddle). Ending on a positive note the song tells the story of finding a calm place and state of mind after the storm, being satisfied with your life and enjoying nature around you, as reflected by the cherry tree garden on the cover. In 2016, Foals singer Yannis Philippakis was offered the opportunity of a lifetime: a two-day session with the great drummer Tony Allen. The pair quickly established an intuitive telepathy, and the music, germinated from jams and loops, and was complemented by a unique atmosphere of two cultures and creatives colliding. Joined by Tony’s regular collaborators Vincent Taeger (percussion, marimba), Vincent Taurelle (keys) and Ludovic Bruni (bass, guitar) that first meeting resulted in a handful of near complete songs, which were further developed during a couple subsequent sessions. But between scheduling issues and Covid restrictions, the recordings were not completed before Tony passed away in April 2020. Yannis felt a deep duty to complete the project, not only as a bittersweet way to honor and celebrate his old friend, but also because Tony had been so eager to share these songs with the world. The result is this five-track EP, Lagos Paris London, under the Yannis & The Yaw umbrella.

Rhinestoned [Ultra Clear LP]
$24.98  24.92

Maggie Antone's voice has always won people over. Singing along to the radio from her carseat, it first won her parents over—enough so that they supported her through voice lessons, musical theater, and national anthem gigs around her hometown of Richmond. Later, with her recording of Tyler Childers's "Lady May," Antone's voice would win the Internet over, too, gaining so much praise that she would go on to release an entire collection of covers, Interpretations, the following year. But lately, the fans at Antone’s packed-out gigs are singing every word to her songs: After all, even if her voice is what draws you in, it's the vulnerability of her songwriting that will keep you coming back. Antone’s forthcoming Rhinestoned offers ten songs worth of compelling evidence that this Virginia native just might be country’s next big thing. Out August 23rd, 2024 on her own label Love Big via Thirty Tigers, the album only builds on the runaway success of her debut original single “Suburban Outlaw”—a song Holler praised for "lyrics that land like zippy teen movie one-liners." Raucous, witty, and irresistible, album opener "Johnny Moonshine" shows off Antone’s flare for storytelling one croon-worthy double entendre at a time. On the timeless "Mess with Texas," Antone leans into her honky-tonk sensibilities, playfully recounting the exes she collected across various locales before landing on the real thing in the Lone Star State. And standout track "High Standards" contrasts evocative harmonies with biting wordplay, delivering a blunt tell-off to a presumptuous stoner on a late night gone hazy. The clever lyrics and catchy melodies make fitting vessels for Antone's larger-than-life charisma and natural stage presence—qualities she'll show off on the road this summer during gigs with Kat Hasty, the Red Clay Strays and 49 Winchester as well as on stages at Bonnaroo, Bourbon & Beyond, and Foxfire. But for all the hard-partying lyrics and self-deprecating jokes, Antone's biggest strength on Rhinestoned may be her willingness to show weakness. "I don't write love songs," she sings on "Everyone But You," "'cause I don't wanna sing 'em when the love is gone." The slow tempo of "I Don't Wanna Hear About It," a heartbreaker that mourns a breakup even while wishing the person well, lays bare Antone’s emotional vocals. And Antone is perhaps her most raw on the closing track, "Meant to Meet," a song about the vices and shortcomings that can wreck a relationship—even one that feels fated. "With situationships and such nowadays, it feels like no one is looking for the real thing anymore," she says. "This album, and that song specifically, is for the people who didn't get the â€I'm sorry’ text. I want it to be closure for people who need it." In some ways, opening up like this comes naturally to Antone; she's been writing songs since she was 16. But she's quick to credit her collaborators in the studio and the writing room for the way they've embraced and emboldened her. While several songs were solo writing endeavors ("Suburban Outlaw," "One Too Many," “Me & Jose Cuervo”), Antone leaned into co-writes: Trent Dabbs (Ingrid Michaelson, Kacey Musgraves), Aaron Raitiere (Lady Gaga, Ashley McBryde), Jillian Jacqueline (Keith Urban, Little Big Town), and others all contributed. Working with longtime writing role model Natalie Hemby (the Highwomen, Miranda Lambert) on “Johnny Moonshine” was a particular high point: "Natalie is my hero," Antone says. "She's the first songwriter that I ever truly loved." And frequent writing partner Carrie K. (Noah Kahan, Jessie Murph, Suki Waterhouse) helped bring Rhinestoned to life alongside Antone as her co-producer. "Working with Carrie,” Antone says, “I felt like all my thoughts were seen.” What emerged is a work that offers Antone's raspy drawl space to shine and her big heart room to heal. "Sometimes you don't have that full love story where you meet someone, you fall in love, you date for a long time, you break up, and then you're upset; sometimes we just have these short-lived little things," she says. "This album is about a million of those teeny tiny little things, all wrapped up into one story. No matter how big or small it is, when you’ve gone through something and you hurt, it matters."

Pa' Tu Cuerpa [LP]

"This album is a result of my surroundings, fortunately being surrounded by beautiful people and things. It’s a reminder to live day by day with positivity and happiness. Each song is a story; an experience that was lived and that’s what I like the most. The sounds, rhythms and musical details transport you to the emotions of that moment. The collaborating and learning and sharing with other artists is special. And, of course, having the Funk and Afrocuban in the veins and find the right blend and expression of Funk and Afrocuban in each groove. It’s a new sound with new grooves, but the same spirit. This album represents the animal, the flesh, the nakedness, the skin, and the melanin returning to the mountains. The album is a journey as animals thru each song, sometimes in captivity and sometimes as a predator. Cimafunk’s previous albums Terapia (Therapy) and El Alimento (The Nutrient) also represented what’s essential and this album does as well: Basic Instincts."

Lauren Watkins - "The Heartbroken Record" / Drenched in authenticity and rife with barstool charm, with an addictive, Tennessee limestone gravel in her voice, Nashville-born and bred songbird Lauren Watkins writes, breathes and lives country music. The 24-year-old original grew up on the outskirts of Guitar Town, mesmerized by a jukebox rotation of country music, from outlaws like Willie Nelson and Sheryl Crow to chart-toppers Eric Church, Miranda Lambert and Chris Stapleton. Moving back after four years at Ole Miss, Watkins' unyielding, turn-on-a-dime lyricism quickly caught the attention of GRAMMY-nominated multi-hyphenate Nicolle Galyon, who signed her to publishing and recording contracts with Songs & Daughters/Big Loud Records. Honing in on a sound that's both reverent of the genre's roots and in lockstep with where it's headed next, she presents her highly anticipated full-length debut, The Heartbroken Record.

American Son [Colored Vinyl]
$30.98  29.03
chart cover
Lyrical maverick and unrelenting vocalist Colby Acuff will release his latest project, American Son, Aug. 23., 2024. - "Maybe it was the state of mind I was in, coming out of a grueling touring year in 2023," Acuff shared of the personal LP. "It was a trying time. My Dad was terminally ill. I was looking around, taking stock of a lot of things - and it put me in a very weird place. I started pouring a lot into the songs, being very brutally honest. I wanted to make a record that really said something." - With American Son, Acuff more than delivers. Working with producer/engineer Eddie Spear (Zach Bryan, Brandi Carlile), they've created a robust, acoustic-forward power punch that packs a force as ambient as it is unvarnished. Throughout the 16 tracks, Acuff lands like a drop of bleach in greasy water. Inducing clarity in the bombast, he harvests the reckoning of an indulgent world that refuses to own consequences - and throws light on realities too long ignored. - "If you make me break it down, I think it's four different pillars," he said. "It's the state of the union and humanity. It's mental health. But it's also hope and love. You can't dive too deep into the darkness without those two things, or you'll never get out." - The album also features "How Do I Feel Alive," with rising sibling trio The Castellows, as well as Acuff's take on Leonard Cohen's "Suzanne.

Avanti [Colored Vinyl]

There are ghosts all across AVANTI, the debut album fromMalice K. At points it's howling and unhinged, a grungy layeratop a lush foundation of melodic capital-s Songwriting, but inother moments it dissolves into a gentle, wistful haunting.Malice K's songs are blunt, uncomplicated and unflinching as heprobes the interiority of memories, of mistakes - saturated withan innate intensity that sucks you into his gnarled and visceralworld, so barbed it could draw blood.Malice K is helmed by visual artist and songwriter AlexKonschuh, New York-based but born and raised in Olympia,Washington. Following a stint living in Los Angeles, where hebecame a member of the artist collective Death Proof Inc., a tripto New York resulted in him simply never leaving the city. Aperiod of chaos ensued, Malice K exhausted and unmoored andultimately, unwell. The record is unpredictable across it's 11 songs. The album openswith a jarring scream on "Halloween," Malice K's breathlessvocals buried beneath a grungy, roving Nineties riff. The trackemanates a manic energy, enveloping. It's a fitting entrypointfor the record, and for the vividness of Malice K. The snarling andobsessive "You're My Girl" has a swaggering paranoia: "I got sohigh I thought my hand touching my hand was your hand." ButAVANTI exists in quieter moments too; "Radio," with it'sfluttering morose cello, moves at an almost glacial pacecomparatively. The aching wistfulness of "The Old House" is analbum stand-out, anchored in an acoustic guitar, an uneasylullaby that never quite settles into itself: "I think to myself I gotthe things that I wanted, but I can't help think there'ssomething else that I forgot to do."A recent press interview called Malice K a shapeshifter, but he'snot amorphous in that way. He's decisive and intense, moreconcerned with carving his own path, and building his ownworld. Every part of Malice K is distinctly himself: from hissweaty high-octane shows to the high-flash high-contrastphotos; from his gnarled and unsettling illustrations to thestudio recordings that vacillate between grief and tenderness, there's an exceptional ferocity across everything Malice Ktouches.AVANTI feels lived in, like peering into an abandoned housethrough a window smeared with grimy fingerprints, relics of alife well-lived scattered inside - despite being a debut, there'sthe sense that Malice K arrived fully-realized, imperfections andall.

In May 2019, the Stray Cats released their first new studio album in 26 years titled "40" in honor of the band’s 40th anniversary. Brian Setzer (guitar, vocals), Lee Rocker (bass, vocals) and Slim Jim Phantom (drums, vocals) — original founding members of the iconic and acclaimed American rock and roll trio — returned with brand new songs recorded in Nashville and produced by Peter Collins (Rush, Bon Jovi) and engineered by Vance Powell (Chris Stapleton, Jack White).

“Forty years ago, us three teenagers started a little band to play a musical style that had long since
passed, and most folks had never heard of, this Rockabilly music. Forty years later we stand together
and still get that same thrill and exhilaration from the music. That feeling is what makes the fireworks go off and the sparks fly. It makes the world go around.” — Brian Setzer

“Making a new Stray Cats album for 2019 in Nashville seems like the exact right thing, right time, right
place, and right band for the gig! We have an album’s worth of new songs that are classic rockabilly
while keeping the music and style current and fresh, like always. In other words...A Stray Cats album." — Slim Jim Phantom

“They say history repeats itself and I now know that’s true. 40 years after Brian, Jim and I formed the
Stray Cats, we are back! I’m so excited to be in the studio with my brothers. I can tell you that this will
be the best Stray Cats album we have ever made. The time is right, the songs are great and we’re ready to rock.” — Lee Rocker

Lotus were early innovators in fusing electronic dance music with a jam band model of improvisation and ever-changing setlists. The four-piece group also draws on psychedelic rock, krautrock, post-rock, disco, and funk. Their dance-inducing, high-energy shows have made them festival favorites, as they move between high-flying guitar solos and modular synth workouts, with tightly composed songs and free-ranging group improvisation.2024's How to Dream in Color is Lotus's 11th full-length studio album. While largely an instrumental group, vocals appear on several songs across the record's 12 tracks - both as traditional singing and as manipulated electronic elements; each composition builds it's world and atmosphere. "How Do I Come Down" is a rocking banger lead-off song with hints of Radiohead and features vocals from Gabe Otto. Watching the Distant Storm layers synths and cut-up vocals to form a groovy, chill, wholly unique experience. "In the Shadow of the Mountain" is a driving Krautrock instrumental that builds to glorious climax over 8:30 minutes.

For nearly a decade, Muscadine Bloodline have delivered a soulful and potent form of country music indelibly colored by their Alabama heritage. But in the making of their latest body of work, the Mobile-bred duo dug deeper into their roots than ever before, dreaming up a batch of songs inspired by the places they know best: the blue-collar melting pot of their coastal hometown, bustling Cajun fishing villages and desolate timberlands, the untamed and idyllic spaces where they ran wild as children. The latest turn in a career that’s included releasing three acclaimed albums, earning a standing ovation at their 2018 Grand Ole Opry debut, and selling out shows across the country as an emphatically independent act, â€The Coastal Plain’ emerged from an acute strengthening of their creative vision.

That's the crux of Sings-Marion is the rare guitarist where you can put on any of his records and know exactly who's playing. In an indie rock landscape stuffed end-to-end with guitars and amplifiers, nobody else sounds like this. That unique voice has kept Steve busy in an unpredictable variety of settings. The sheer spread of his work outside his own records-collaborating with Miley Cyrus and Paul Simon, playing in Amen Dunes and the Black Keys, and being sampled by Kanye-doesn't mean Steve's a chameleon. It means he's singular.Delicate Steve Sings is a record centered on channeling iconic voices with his guitar. In doing so, Marion is casting himself in the role of iconic singers like Willie who make standards their own. In the process, he reveals just how singular (dare we say iconic) that voice is. The guitar sings these songs-smoothly, sweetly, boldly, and on it's own terms. Recorded with Jonathan Rado on bass, Kosta Galanopolous on drums, Renata Zeiguer providing strings, and co-writer Elliot Bergman, the album features both original songs with titles that suggest they might be new recordings of classics. "I'll Be There" is smooth like a lost Bill Withers track; "Easy for You" isn't the Elvis song of the same name, but there's a hint of the king in there, in addition to Marion's own takes onclassics such as the Emersons' "Baby," The Beatles' "Yesterday" and Otis Redding's "These Arms of Mine.""You're tapping into something universal and in the consciousness of pop music," Steve says-tacit permission for his guitar to drift into vocal expressions he's internalized through years of close, repeated listening. Just like all the great singers.

Notes To Self
$14.98  12.63
chart cover
Tama Gucci has a knack for pushing the envelope. The Miami-raised, New York-based singer, producer and DJ's long awaited debut album, Notes to Self, is the culmination of years of forward-thinking pop songwriting and creating intricate club soundscapes. It tracks his evolution from fun-loving cover artist and studious songwriter/producer to self-assured, wholly encompassing visionary. What began as a bedroom SoundCloud project to cover and remix popular songs, quickly blossomed into something far greater. Tama began to write, produce and perform his own music and became enamored with his hometown's queer underground rave scene. For a debut album, Notes to Self sounds rather seasoned, with he fearlessly dipping in and out of various styles, from the warped rock of "Runaway Pup" and the thrumming dance-oriented R&B of "Didn't Have To" to the blinking electro-pop of "Back Then" and moody, atmospheric techno of "You Lost Me." The one word that best captures his approach to dance music is "tender," with his soft, breathy voice-inspired by Y2K pop artists like t.A.T.u. And Frou Frou-cresting atop waves of throttling beats with a warm sensuality and divine omnipotence. But that's not the only way he utilizes his voice on this album. With songs like "Out of the Loop" and "Stalk Me 151 to 170," he dramatically pitch-shifts his vocals over industrial throbs and cutesy hyperpop, respectively, to invigorating effect. It's easy to lean into the escapism of the music, but lyrically, the album is quite rewarding for anyone paying attention. It's an unabashedly romantic and brooding record, predominantly centering self-growth and happiness and gleaning wisdom from past mistakes. Sprinkling sobering moments of clarity into dance music was a meaningful choice for him, who cherished songs of a similar vein as a child. "One of my favorite songs that I specifically remember waiting for the radio to play when I was 10 years old was 'Cry for You' by September," he says. "I always admired how it was a sweet, sad song, but also a breakthrough clarity moment over a club beat, and that's definitely something I wanted to capture." In several ways, Notes to Self is a post-breakup clarity album, as it brims with glaringly straightforward, honest lines about coming back into yourself, contemplating your true priorities and forging towards a new, healthier relationship where you can finally breathe again. "Good Morning Babe" is about reveling in the unexpectedness of a new day, "See You Later" is an empowering realization that a relationship has run it's course and "At The Moon" chronicles the ecstatic, fairytale-like rush of fresh romance. He describes the record as reimagined Notes app musings and journal entries, and while the album's stylistic experimentalism was fortified by late-night, weed smoke-glazed recording sessions, it's stark candidness was influenced by the daytime writing stints that wrapped up the LP. Notes to Self also arrives at the perfect time for Tama Gucci, who's become a staple of New York City's queer electronic underground. He's opened for the likes of Erika de Casier and Christine and the Queens, and guested on Caroline Polachek's Club Quarantine set. He has also been making waves in the fashion world where he's scored New York and Milan Fashion Week runway shows for Mirror Palais, Prabal Gurung and Moschino alongside his partner and fellow DJ, Matthew Mazur; has modeled for the likes of tastemakers like Telfar and more, and he also helms his own brand of tongue-in-cheek handmade apparel & clothing, Tama's Corner. Tama Gucci is immensely proud of how far he has come, and is rightly excited by the prospect of people hearing Notes to Self.

Pom Poko is a Norwegian band renowned for their eclectic blend of indie rock, punk, and pop sensibilities. Formed in Trondheim in 2016, the quartet consists of Ragnhild Fangel, Martin Miguel Tonne, Ola Djupvik, and Jonas Krovel. Since their inception, they've released two critically acclaimed albums and mesmerizing live performances, solidifying their status as one of Norway's most exciting musical exports. Their third album Champion features their dynamic soundscapes, characterized by energetic rhythms, intricate guitar work, and Fangel's distinctive vocals, which have garnered widespread acclaim. With influences ranging from art-rock to jazz, Pom Poko's music defies genre boundaries, delivering a fresh and innovative sonic experience. Speaking of the record, the band said... "This record is a kind of experiment to see what happens when the four of us in Pom Poko make music without any input from the world around us, from the first idea of a song until the last note is recorded. This time, we've recorded and produced absolutely everything ourselves, a process that has been surprisingly comfortable. With this album, we landed, almost unconsciously, on the fact that the songs needed more space and less fussiness in the production than what we've been drawn to before. The songs also feel slightly more concise and focused on this album, perhaps, in addition to the lyrics telling more or less understandable stories - about connection, relationships, weird situations, hopes, and dreams. We were generally drawn to trying out some new things on this record, so this is the first time we've sent music to be mixed abroad, specifically to mixer and producer Ali Chant in Bristol. His clear and straightforward style suits the music very well and really brings out the songs as they are, without unnecessary frills. All in all, this feels like our most mature album so far, but hopefully not completely devoid of childlike joy and energy nonetheless." Champion will be released August 16th via Bella Union.

Transmissions [Translucent Sea Blue LP]

“There's a lot of existential stuff in these songs,” says Amos Lee. “If you really listen to what's in between the lines, there's a lot of grappling with your place in the world, grappling with loss.  There's a lot of grappling with the balance between bailing out the boat and rowing at the same time—the experience of writing music and playing songs while trying, as we all are right now, to make sense of a world that feels like it's changing really quickly.”  On his eleventh studio album, Transmissions, singer-songwriter Lee continues to expand his sonic range while sharpening his closely observed lyrics that squarely address death, aging, and love. The force behind such acclaimed albums as Mission Bell and Mountains of Sorrow, Rivers of Song, ever since his gold-selling 2005 debut Lee has been known for his association with a long list of collaborators and touring partners, from Paul Simon to Zac Brown Band. For the new project, he craved a return to an old-school style of recording, working with his longtime band in a studio in rural Marlboro, New York that was built by drummer Lee Falco and his dad out of reclaimed wood from an old church (“it’s exactly what you’d think a studio in upstate New York should be,” notes Lee). Playing live on the floor for long hours, in close quarters, they were able to capture the album’s twelve songs in less than a week. “I really wanted us to be all in the room, making music together, listening to each other and responding to each other,” says Lee. “In this age where you can do everything at home and fly it in, there’s something really beautiful about getting in a room and starting at the top, the drummer counting in the song and everybody just playing. I would call it vulnerability.”

$38.98  38.73

With his first studio recording as a leader, Bright Size Life was the album that decisively put him on the map as a
bright new force with something fresh to say in the context of contemporary jazz. Recorded in Ludwigsburg in
December 1975, and produced by Manfred Eicher, the album features Metheny’s regular touring band of the day –
Bob Moses on drums and the virtuosic but then largely unknown Jaco Pastorius on bass guitar.
“I could happily play all the music from Bright Size Life right now,” said Pat Metheny in an interview for the Library of
Congress in 2021. “It still seems viable; the arguments there still seem valid and worth thinking about. My sense at
the time was that I wanted to make a record that might be the only record I would ever make. I hoped to make a
statement on things that were important to me in terms of melody, harmony, trio playing, and even kind of life in
general.”

analysis paralysis [Indie Exclusive Electric Blue & Deep Purple]
$25.98  25.92
chart cover
When it was time for Four Year Strong to prep what would become their sixth album, analysis paralysis, they were truly, finally, stumped. Vocalist/guitarists Dan O’Connor and Alan Day showed up to producer Will Putney’s studio on day one of recording without a single finished song, in stark contrast to the 40-some ideas they brought to the table for 2020’s Brain Pain.
The two spent those early days in a bedroom at Putney’s house talking about, and listening to, music, desperate for a spark of inspiration. They found it by looking back: at what made Brain Pain a success and even the genesis of Four Year Strong as a band as they rode their trademark sound – pop-punk energy, dextrous riffage and caustic hardcore spirit – to the top of the underground in the late aughts. Within a month, they’d completed nearly 80% of the album, like the ominous, metal-meets-industrial “aftermath / afterthought.” They melded combustible hardcore rhythms with ‘90s alt-rock melodic bliss (“uncooked”), dabbled in rough-around-the-edges reggae (“out of touch”) and swerved between vibe-heavy synths and thunderous breakdowns (“STFIL”).
The result is an album that expands their classic sound in exciting ways – but through it all, it’s unmistakably them: O’Connor and Day’s distinctive vocals atop the airtight rhythm section prowess drummer Jake Massucco and bassist Joe Weiss provide. This deep into their career, there’s really nothing that doesn’t sound like Four Year Strong with these four involved.

Realistic Ix
$25.98  26.36
chart cover
Realistic IX, the third full-length by the duo of Michael Jones and Turk Dietrich aka Belong, is both an expansion and excavation of their signature acid-washed songcraft. Bleached guitars, metronomic drums, and buried voices rev, swirl, and seethe across shifting gradients of haze and hypnosis, alternately driving and diffuse. Melodies surge closer to the surface, flexing their form before resubmerging into quickening currents of feedback. Elsewhere the elements dissipate into a dusk of murk and microtonalities, electricity liberated back into infinite night.Although it's been thirteen years since Belong's prior Kranky offering, Common Era, none of the duo's rare synergy has decayed in the interim. Jones and Dietrich's commitment to oblique states of motorik drone and liminal emotion continues to evolve and unfold, increasingly tactile and unreal, an alluring glow glimpsed through fogged windows at witching hours.

Easy Company

By matching the sharply-written songs of three distinct frontmen with a progressive mix of rock & roll, electrified folk, and cosmic American roots music, Futurebirds have built an audience that's as wide as the band's own sound. With Easy Company, Futurebirds' fifth studio album, that sound reaches a new peak. Featuring four songs apiece from singer/songwriters Womack, Johnson, and Carter King, Easy Company feels like a celebration of the tight-knit bonds that have held Futurebirds aloft since 2008. Back then, the guys were college students at the University of Georgia, building a buzz around town with shows at fraternity houses and local bars. Years later, they've become headliners at bucket-list venues like The Ryman and The Fillmore, collaborating with fellow genre benders like My Morning Jacket's Carl Broemel along the way.

Double vinyl LP pressing. 2024 release. Masked metal masters Mushroomhead return with the cinematic Call The Devil - laying waste to any preconceived notions of where the band is headed in their third decade of reign. Returning after a 12 year hiatus, longtime guitarist Dave "Gravy" Felton - who performed on several of the band's biggest albums and is credited as a primary songwriter on classic anthems like "Along The Way", "Sun Doesn't Rise" and "The Dream Is Over" - contributes his trademark skills to two album tracks. Call The Devil once again features production by band mastermind/drummer Skinny, as well as the return of Matt Wallace (Faith No More, 3 Doors Down) on mixing, also recognized for his work on Mushroomhead's iconic album XIII.

Oyster Cuts
$24.98  21.41
chart cover
Oyster Cuts, the Merge Records debut of Quivers, finds the Melbourne, Australia-based outfit awash in the kind of emotions people tend to fear losing themselves in. Finding love after grief, the outsized guitar pop of Quivers gleams like the surface of an ocean, beneath which lies a reef that is at turns beautiful and painful, it's features alien and sharp enough to wound. Propelled by melodies that at times recall Galaxie 500 and The Pretenders, Quivers make music that is tender and tough, compelling the listener to dive in again and again, each song a new angle on all of your feelings. Oyster Cuts is sunshine pop with blood in the water. The losses and loves that have informed Quivers' music since their inception-the sudden loss of a brother in the cracked optimism of We'll Go Riding on the Hearses (2018) and the life in and after grief of Golden Doubt (2021)-ripple into Oyster Cuts, which is committed to moving forward while accepting that some feelings, like grief, are a cycle. Crucially, Quivers committed to moving forward with each other. Paring away the choir and strings of Golden Doubt, Oyster Cuts is a showcase for what's still possible when four people-Sam Nicholson (guitars), Bella Quinlan (bass), Michael Panton (guitars), and Holly Thomas (drums)-make music together. In utilizing tape loops-which open and close Oyster Cuts, circling the album like sharks-Quivers place emphasis on repetition, deploying patterned riffs and navigating circular thoughts until they swell to their breaking point. Their dreamy strain of sun-faded jangle pop is leaner and more muscular as a result, their keenly observed palette darkened with blushes of The Cure, Echo & the Bunnymen, and The Durutti Column. Within this framework, Quivers break new ground as a band, adding dimension to their hallmark group vocals by having Quinlan take lead on four songs, homing in on the interwoven guitars of Nicholson and Panton, and driving it all home on the purposeful groove of Quinlan and Thomas.Lead single "Apparition" is a slice of jangle-damaged AM radio gold. When Nicholson begins singing, "Don't get ahead of yourself / Don't patent your sorrow / If your heart's not open yet, just try again tomorrow," the song takes on the shape of a forgotten favorite resurfacing on a late-night drive, it's revelations and understanding tumbling into place with startling clarity. Title track "Oyster Cuts," featuring Quinlan on lead vocals, is more intimate, narrating the process of surfacing from heartache, warmly illuminated by a droning synth and guitars that sound like pizzicato violin by the end of the song.Quivers' songs feel like long-running conversations between friends in the sense that a conversation is both an act of speech and a space people hold for each other. The first two tracks on Oyster Cuts, "Never Be Lonely" and "Pink Smoke," take those private universes composed of shared language, memories, snatches of songs, and the light of a cell phone's screen mid-doomscroll and turn them into a beacon, searching lyrics set ablaze by massive hooks. "All I ever wanted was a true friend / All I wanted was a friend with benefits / All I ever wanted was transcendence," sing Quinlan and Thomas at the outset of the album, and Oyster Cuts spools out into the horizon from there. The four members of Quivers are not only given to exploring this space but to filling as much of it with themselves as possible, locking in on each other no matter how hazy and chaotic matters of the heart can get. Every moment of catharsis Quivers conjure from the ether is an invitation to join them. Listening to them soar where others would ruminate, their invitation is impossible to resist.

Joe Henry’s 2009 record “Blood From Stars” sees him exploring the realms of orchestral blues and jazz. Not only is Henry a Grammy Award winning producer, but also a well-respected and prolific artist in his own right. With his evocative lyrics and soulful vocal delivery, Henry crafts a poignant narrative that stands as a testament to his terrific skills as a songwriter and lyricist. Supported by the likes of guitarist Marc Ribot and pianist Patrick Warren, the album leans into the darker and more raw sounds of blues – a departure from the expected Joe Henry sound to create something new but captivating all the same. Now available on 180g black double vinyl for the first time ever, the 2024 reissue includes five special “Live-On-Air” bonus tracks, recorded and broadcast live in Los Angeles on KCRW’s “Morning Becomes Eclectic” hosted by Jason Bentley on Oct 8, 2009. They allow the listener to get even closer to Henry’s powerful words and melodies, making the reissue of “Blood From Stars” a great addition to any Joe Henry fan’s collection.
